French Brocante Petite Advertising Mustard Jar $65

Isn’t it interesting how the objects we treasure most are often the ones that were never intended to be treasured at all, those small remnants of everyday life that quietly survived long enough to bring a sense of history into our homes?

This petite vintage French mustard crock is one of those quiet survivors. It began its life as an advertising jar for Dijon mustard, something practical that might once have sat on a kitchen shelf or found its way to a family table without anyone imagining it would still be here decades later. Its creamy white glaze, wonderfully old fashioned blue lettering, and heraldic crest give it all the character of everyday French kitchenware that has become increasingly difficult to stumble upon. Perhaps that is what makes pieces like this so appealing now. Its small stature asks for very little space yet brings so much personality with it. A few garden flowers immediately turn it into the sweetest miniature vase, while left empty among old books, ironstone, or collected kitchen pieces, its original purpose becomes part of the story rather than something to disguise. Signed Digoin Sarreguemines and marked Product of France, it has been beautifully preserved with only very minor signs of aging. There is something especially lovely about finding an old utilitarian object in this condition and allowing it to begin an entirely different chapter. Once these small pieces of French advertising pottery disappear into private collections, finding another with quite the same scale, graphics, and history is never guaranteed.
